product # nq15w50sga30 p hone 1-888-567-9596 w ww.synqor.com d oc.# 005-2ns163e rev. e 1 0/07/10 p age 9 input: outputs: current: package: 6.0 - 15.0v 0.8 - 5.0v 30a smt t s over-temperature shutdown : a temperature sensor on the converter senses the average temperature of the module. the ther - mal shutdown circuit is designed to turn the converter off when the temperature a t t he s ensed l ocation r eaches t he o ver-temperature shutdown v alue. i t w ill a llow t he c onverter t o t urn o n a gain w hen the temperature of the sensed location falls by the amount of the over-temperature s hutdown r estart h ysteresis v alue. application c onsiderations input filtering/capacitance/damping : t he f ilter c ircuit o f figure e i s o ften a dded t o t he c onverters i nput t o p revent s witch - ing noise from reaching the input voltage bus. in t he s ga30 ( surface m ount) c onverters c in = 2 0f o f h igh quality c eramic c apacitors. w ith l in o f 1 h, c d s hould b e 100-200f a nd r d s hould b e 0 .1-0.2 w , in most applications. for m ore i nformation o n d esigning t he i nput f ilter a nd c hoosing proper values, contact synqor technical support. adding significant external pure ceramic capacitance directly across the converters input pins is not recommended. parasitic inductance associated with the input pin geometry and pcb traces can create a high-q clc circuit with any external capacitors. just a few nano-henries of parasitic inductance can create a resonance (or an overtone) near the converters switching frequency. to avoid this high-frequency resonance, any external input filter should exhibit a net source impedance of at least 2 0m w resistive through this frequency range. this requirement is easily met with the damping elements discussed above. adding a small amount (a few f) of high-frequency external ceramic will not violate it. if u sing c onverters a t h igher p owers, c onsider t he r ipple c urrent rating of cd. contact synqor technical support for details. output capacitance : i t i s r ecommended t o a dd a t l east 1 00f of c apacitance, w ith a n e sr i n t he 0 .1 w range, to the output of the s ga30 s eries o f c onverters. i n m any a pplications, h owever, additional external output capacitance is required to reduce the response to load transients to an allowable level. for m inimal o vershoot u pon r ecovery, c d s hould b e r elated t o t he minimum i n-circuit n et e sr. for m ore d etailed d erivations o f t hese v alues c ontact s ynqor technical support. active load sharing : f or a dditional p ower r equirements, t he sga30 s eries o f c onverters h ave a p arallel f eature a vailable. t o implement forced load sharing, the following connections should be m ade: ? t he s hare p ins o f a ll u nits i n p arallel m ust b e c onnected together. the path of these connections should be as direct as possible. ? a ll o n/off p ins s hould b e c onnected t ogether. the share bus is not designed for redundant operation and the system will be non-functional upon failure of one of the units when multiple units are in parallel. when not using the parallel feature, leave the share pin open. surface m ount i nformation pcb layout considerations: synqor recommends that the customer use a non-solder mask defined pad design. the minimum r ecommended p ad s ize i s 0 .074 x 0 .122 ( 1.88mm x 3 .1mm) a nd t he m aximum p ad s ize i s 0 .095 x 0 .140 (2.41mm x 3 .56mm), s ee t he m echanical d iagram o n p age 2 . interconnection t o i nternal p ower p lanes i s t ypically r equired. this can be accomplished by placing a number of vias between the smt pad and the relevant plane. the number and location of the vias should be determined based on electrical resistance, current a nd t hermal r equirements. via-in-pad d esign s hould b e avoided in the smt pads. solder mask should be used to elimi - nate solder wicking into the vias. pick and place: the niqor surface mount modules are designed for automated assembly using standard smt pick and place equipment. the modules have a centrally located inductor component with a flat surface area to be used for component pick-up. the units use open frame construction and have a low mass that is within the capability of standard pick and place equipment. those modules however have a larger mass than most conventional s mt c omponents a nd s o v ariables s uch a s n ozzle size, t ip s tyle, h andling s peed, a nd p lacement p ressure s hould b e optimized f or b est r esults. a c onformal t ipped p lacement n ozzle design i s r ecommended. c oplanarity o f b etter t han 0 .004 (0.1mm) i s a chieved t hrough t he s mt n iqors t erminal d esign. figure h: converter with additional output capacitance figure e: converter with input filter
